IMMIGRATION GUIDE
Your trade skills deserve a precise review. Connect qualifying experience with the offer or certification requirements that apply.
PLAIN-LANGUAGE OVERVIEW
The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST) is an Express Entry pathway for qualifying tradespeople. The trade classification, work history, language evidence, and offer or Canadian certification requirements need to be reviewed together. A trade qualification alone is not a promise of an invitation.
These are key factors, not a complete eligibility test. Check the current official instructions and your individual circumstances before applying.
Generally, two years of qualifying paid experience within the preceding five years is needed in the same eligible trade NOC. Review duties, required hours, and where you were qualified to practise.
You need either a valid full-time job offer for at least one year or a qualifying certificate issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial, or federal authority. Foreign trade documents are not automatically the Canadian certificate.
Check approved language evidence: CLB/NCLC 5 in speaking and listening, and 4 in reading and writing. There is no minimum education requirement; education may still affect CRS ranking.
Review settlement funds or an applicable exception, admissibility, and settlement plans outside Quebec. Work gained while studying does not count toward the program’s minimum experience.
Review the occupation, relevant duties, experience, and qualification history.
Establish the evidence for the qualifying Canadian offer or certificate and any licensing questions.
Review language, other requirements, and the support for the facts entered in Express Entry.
Maintain accurate information. If invited, prepare the supporting application according to the current instructions.
The exact checklist depends on your route, stage, and circumstances. This list helps prepare the discussion; it does not replace IRCC’s personalized document requirements.
Eligibility and evidence both matter. The following points deserve attention; this is not an exhaustive list or a prediction of a decision.

The program has an offer-or-certificate requirement. A qualifying Canadian certificate can satisfy that alternative; other requirements still apply.
There is no minimum education requirement for FST. Education can still contribute to Express Entry ranking where supported.
No. Eligibility and invitation selection remain separate steps.
