PLAIN-LANGUAGE OVERVIEW

Understand the starting point.

Applying from inside Canada is an application route, not a permit category. Your location, status, and the basis for the permit need separate review. Being in Canada as a visitor does not, by itself, allow an inland work permit application or employment.

Who this guide may suit

  • Current workers reviewing an extension or a change in conditions.
  • Students or graduates exploring a qualifying work permit category.
  • People whose family circumstances or another recognized situation may allow an inland application.

Eligibility factors to review

Immigration rules change frequently.

These are key factors, not a complete eligibility test. Check the current official instructions and your individual circumstances before applying.

Inland application eligibility

IRCC lists specific situations in which an application can be made inside Canada, including some valid work or study permit holders and other defined groups. Check the applicable category; this is not a complete list.

Underlying permit category

You still need to qualify for the requested employer-specific or open permit. Inland eligibility does not replace those requirements.

Status and timing

Review your permit expiry, application history, and whether extension or restoration rules are relevant. Do not assume a pending application gives you new work rights.

Employer and personal requirements

Check the employer documents required for your category, along with admissibility and the completeness of your evidence.

A careful, step-by-step approach

  1. Map your current position

Gather your permits, expiry dates, and previous application details. Establish which inland route may apply.

  2. Check the permit basis

Identify whether the application needs employer support or evidence for an open permit category.

  3. Prepare and submit

Follow the relevant IRCC instructions, review your documents for consistency, and retain the submission record.

  4. Check what you may do next

Review your right to remain and work while waiting. Read all conditions and dates on any permit issued.

Your document starting point

The exact checklist depends on your route and circumstances. This list helps prepare the discussion; it does not replace IRCC’s personalized document requirements.

  • Passport pages and current immigration documents.
  • Your present permit, status history, and relevant submission records.
  • LMIA or employer offer details where the category requires them.
  • Evidence for your open permit category, if applicable.
  • Supporting employment, education, relationship, or other records relevant to your route.
  • Medical, biometrics, translations, or additional evidence requested by IRCC.

Refusal risks and preparation pitfalls

Eligibility and evidence both matter. The following points deserve attention; this is not an exhaustive list or a prediction of a decision.

  • Using an inland route without meeting its conditions.
  • Treating visitor status or a new job offer as permission to work.
  • Incomplete employer evidence or inconsistent dates in the application.
  • Failing to address status expiry, previous refusals, or other relevant history.

Common questions

Can every visitor apply from inside Canada?

No. You must fall within an applicable inland application situation and meet the requirements of the permit category.

Can I start working once I submit?

Not necessarily. Submission alone does not create work permission. Confirm any continuing authorization and its conditions before working.

What if my current permit is expiring?

Review your dates promptly. The appropriate extension, status, or restoration approach depends on your situation; do not wait for expiry to seek guidance.
