PLAIN-LANGUAGE OVERVIEW

Understand the starting point.

A visitor visa is a travel document for people who need one to seek entry to Canada. It is different from permission to work or study, and from the period you may remain after entering. Review your nationality, travel purpose, and circumstances before choosing the appropriate application.

Who this guide may suit

  • People planning tourism or a family visit to Canada.
  • Applicants documenting a short business visit that does not involve entering the Canadian labour market.
  • Families reviewing travel arrangements and the evidence behind a temporary visit.

Eligibility factors to review

Immigration rules change frequently.

These are key factors, not a complete eligibility test. Check the current official instructions and your individual circumstances before applying.

Right travel document

Check whether your citizenship and travel circumstances require a visa, an electronic travel authorization, or another document.

Purpose and temporary intent

Explain why you are visiting and why you will leave when the authorized stay ends. Your employment, family, home, or financial ties may be relevant.

Funds and arrangements

Show how the visit will be paid for. The planned duration, accommodation, and any support from a host need to make sense together.

Personal and travel history

Review your passport, admissibility, previous applications, and any requested medical or background evidence. Children may need additional travel documents.

A careful, step-by-step approach

  1. Clarify the visit

Describe the purpose, proposed timing, and who will be travelling or hosting you.

  2. Build the supporting record

Prepare financial, travel, and personal evidence that coherently explains the visit.

  3. Apply and respond

Follow the instructions for your purpose and location, then complete any requested biometrics or other steps.

  4. Review the decision and entry

Follow passport or travel instructions after approval. At entry, check the period and conditions of your authorized stay.

Your document starting point

The exact checklist depends on your route, stage, and circumstances. This list helps prepare the discussion; it does not replace IRCC’s personalized document requirements.

  • Valid passport or travel document and relevant travel history.
  • A practical outline of the proposed visit and accommodation.
  • Financial evidence and an explanation of who pays the costs.
  • Invitation and relationship records where relevant to the visit.
  • Employment, family, or other records supporting your circumstances.
  • Applicable child-travel permissions, translations, and personalized checklist records.

Refusal risks and preparation pitfalls

Eligibility and evidence both matter. The following points deserve attention; this is not an exhaustive list or a prediction of a decision.

  • An unclear visit purpose or conflicting travel details.
  • Funding evidence that does not support the proposed arrangements.
  • An incomplete explanation of relevant circumstances or prior refusals.
  • Assuming a host’s invitation by itself establishes eligibility.

Common questions

Does the visa guarantee entry?

No. A visa permits you to travel to seek entry; entry and the authorized stay are assessed at the border.

Is visa validity the same as how long I can stay?

No. Visa validity and the period authorized for an individual visit are different. Check the entry instructions and any visitor record.

Can I work on a visitor visa?

A visitor visa alone does not authorize employment. Review work authorization separately before starting work.

Is an invitation enough?

An invitation can help explain a visit, but it does not replace the applicant’s own requirements and supporting evidence.
